Cast iron shoulder plane by Joseph Popping, one of the rare US makers of infills, who were clustered in New York in the late 1800s. The iron, rather than the body, is marked, which was typical, but the design is consistent with other Popping planes.?8-1/2" sole, 1-1/2" cutter with one corner chipped. Rosewood infill. The wedge has shrunk so that it slides too far into the body, which is why you see some of these with a shim under the wedge, but the wood is otherwise very clean. Some surface oxidation on the body, and the iron is rusty. A rare infill. Good (CSA476) 150-250 7204-026 1970-01-01T00:00:00+01:00 1970-01-01T00:00:00+01:00 /current-auction/auction-list/viewbids/14754/7204-026 7204-026 User made infill shoulder plane. Instead of a cast or dovetailed body, the cheeks and sole are separate pieces screwed to the wood fill, with 10 screws in the sole and 20 in each cheek. 12" sole, 1-1/2" unmarked iron; the front plate of the sole has to be unscrewed to take it out. Fill looks like mahogany. User name stamped in wood, and some punched decoration. An unusual design.
